What Is The Target Fineness For High‑Value Recovered Carbon Black

High-value recovered carbon black (rCB) refers mainly to tire-grade and high-performance rubber grades that can partially replace virgin carbon black. The target fineness is defined by D97 (the coarse tail limit) as the primary specification, paired with D50 median agglomerate size and narrow PSD span. This is the critical metric for premium rCB pricing.

Standard Target Fineness for Tire‑Grade High‑Value rCB

This is the highest-value mainstream grade, widely used for tire tread and sidewall compounds:

  • D97 ≤ 10 μm (most common commercial target; some strict tire buyers specify D97 ≤ 8 μm)
  • D50: 3–6 μm
  • PSD: Narrow span, minimal oversized agglomerates

This fineness is achievable with well-tuned ACM classifier mills, while fluidized bed opposed jet mills deliver more consistent, cleaner material for the strictest tire specs.

Ultra‑Fine Premium High‑Value rCB (Specialty Rubber / High‑End Masterbatch)

For premium technical rubber, high-performance plastic masterbatch, specialty coatings and conductive polymer applications:

  • D97 ≤ 4–6 μm
  • D50: 1.5–3 μm
This grade is normally produced by fluidized bed opposed jet milling. It commands a higher price than standard tire-grade rCB, due to lower metal contamination and tighter particle size control.

Important clarification: These values describe agglomerate size, not primary carbon black spheres. The primary carbon particles remain nanoscale; grinding only breaks porous pyrolysis char agglomerates.

Why D97 Is The Dominant Fineness Spec

High-value rCB buyers prioritize D97 above D50. Even a tiny volume of large agglomerates will cause surface defects, reduced tensile strength and poor abrasion resistance in tires. A D97 overrun will downgrade rCB from tire-grade to low-cost filler grade, sharply reducing market value.

Supporting Quality Requirements Alongside Fineness

High-value rCB requires more than just PSD:

  • Low residual steel / iron content (ppm-level)
  • Controlled ash content
  • Stable BET surface area and DBP oil absorption
  • Low moisture and consistent batch-to-batch PSD

Mill Selection Matching Target Fineness

  1. D97 ≤10 μm tire grade: ACM air classifier mill (mainstream mass production), or fluidized bed jet mill for premium batches.
  2. D97 ≤4–6 μm ultra-fine specialty grade: Fluidized bed opposed jet mill is preferred.

The standard target fineness for high-value tire-grade rCB is D97 ≤10 μm, D50 3–6 μm. For ultra-premium specialty applications, the target is tightened to D97 ≤4–6 μm. Achieving this fineness requires closed-circuit grinding with dynamic classification, rigorous pre-treatment and stable process control, allowing rCB to substitute virgin carbon black in high-performance rubber and tire formulations.
