Bulk density (also referred to as pour density) of recovered carbon black (rCB) powder varies widely depending on particle fineness, refining degree, processing history and testing method. There is no single universal value, as rCB is manufactured in multiple grades — from coarse crude pyrolysis char to ultra-fine refined powder — each with distinct particle packing behavior. For industrial design, storage sizing and process engineering, it is critical to distinguish between loose-pour bulk density and tapped density, and to match the value to the specific product grade.

Typical Bulk Density Ranges by rCB Grade

1. Ultra-fine refined rCB powder (D90 < 10μm)

2. Standard commercial-grade rCB powder

Conventional industrial-grade rCB, with a typical particle size range of 10–100μm and standard mechanical refining, represents the most widely traded commodity form of the material. Its loose bulk density generally falls in the range of 200 to 350 kg/m³ (0.2–0.35 g/cm³).

This grade balances dispersion performance and handling practicality, and is the standard specification for most general rubber goods, plastic masterbatches, coatings and filler applications. Ash content also exerts a minor upward influence on density in this range, as inorganic mineral residues have a higher true density than amorphous carbon.

3. Pelletized / densified rCB

To reduce dust emissions, improve transportation efficiency and simplify volumetric dosing, many commercial rCB suppliers offer pelletized or densified product forms. After mechanical compaction or pelletization, bulk density increases significantly to 300 to 500 kg/m³ (0.3–0.5 g/cm³).

Densified rCB retains the same chemical composition and reinforcing performance as its powder equivalent, but requires adequate shear during compounding to re-disperse fully. This form is preferred for large-volume continuous manufacturing lines where dust control and feeding consistency are high priorities.

Key Factors Influencing rCB Bulk Density

Bulk density is not an intrinsic fixed property of rCB; it is a state property that shifts with processing and handling conditions. The most impactful variables include:

  1. Particle size and size distribution
    Finer particles create more inter-particle void space, resulting in lower bulk density. Narrow particle size distribution — a hallmark of high-precision air classification — also tends to lower packing density, as there are fewer small particles to fill gaps between larger ones.
  2. Ash and carbon composition
    Inorganic ash components such as zinc oxide and silica have a much higher true density than amorphous carbon. All else being equal, higher ash content slightly increases bulk density. This effect is usually modest, however, and is often overridden by changes in particle fineness.
  3. Handling and compaction state
    Loose-pour bulk density measured by free filling is the lowest value. After vibration or settling, tapped density typically rises by 30–50% and is the more reliable reference for silo and storage tank design. Pneumatic conveying, bag filling and long-term settling all increase apparent bulk density.
  4. Moisture content
    Commercial rCB typically has a moisture content below 1%, which has negligible effect on bulk density. Elevated moisture can cause particle agglomeration and slightly raise apparent density, but is generally considered a quality defect rather than a controlled parameter.
